Sunderland: Stephen Elliott calls for Sam Greenwood return - Sunderland News

Stephen Elliott has suggested on social media platform Twitter that a move for Leeds United youngster Sam Greenwood would be a good idea.

With the transfer window in England open until early October, Black Cats boss Phil Parkinson could still bring in some new faces.

question mark

Which Sunderland manager has the best win percentage of all time?

Relying on the likes of Will Grigg, Charlie Wyke and Danny Graham for goals, Parkinson could add a fourth striker to his squad in hopes of providing enough firepower to ensure a promotion back to the Championship.

One striker who has now been linked with a move to the Stadium of Light is Greenwood, having performed well for the Yorkshire club’s under-23 side against Sunderland on Monday evening, netting an impressive hat-trick.

The 18-year-old’s rise and good form at both under-18 and under-23 level could see him move out on loan to gain first team experience.

Former Sunderland and Republic of Ireland international forward Elliott has suggested on Twitter that the Black Cats should sign Greenwood on loan from Leeds.

Greenwood joined Leeds from Arsenal in the summer transfer window, as announced on the Gunners’ official website in August 2020, having left Sunderland in 2018.

If Greenwood is available on a loan deal, Sunderland boss Parkinson would be wise to complete a move. Indeed, since leaving the Black Cats he has flourished in youth football, netting a total of 23 goals whilst providing 12 assists in his 63 appearances (Transfermarkt).

The more attacking options the better for Parkinson this season with promotion very much on the agenda and important.
