# Sunderland: Luton Town rival Black Cats in Demetri Mitchell transfer chase

**Luton Town have [emerged](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-8630895/Manchester-United-defender-Max-Taylor-talks-MK-Dons-loan-move.html) as rivals to Sunderland for the summer signing of former Manchester United youngster Demetri Mitchell.**

Black Cats manager Phil Parkinson is seeking promotion to the Championship in 2021 and he has already made some summer signings, bringing in [Bailey Wright](https://www.safc.com/news/team-news/2020/july/bailey-wright-returns-to-sunderland) and [Aiden O’Brien](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/53578913), whilst [Tom Flanagan](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/tom-flanagan-signs-new-deal-18657394#:~:text=Tom%20Flanagan%20will%20stay%20with,at%20the%20end%20of%20June.) signed a new deal to remain at the club.

With the 2020/21 season fast approaching, transfer gossip continues to develop at the Stadium of Light, with Parkinson’s determination to bring in some defenders having seen former Everton defender [Luke Garbutt](https://www.sunderlandecho.com/sport/football/sunderland-afc/phil-parkinson-targeting-moves-scott-fraser-and-luke-garbutt-he-continues-his-sunderland-overhaul-2933805) being linked with a move to Wearside.

Whilst interest in Garbutt has emerged, it has also been claimed by [The Northern Echo](https://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/sport/18633050.sunderland-want-sign-left-back-luke-garbutt/) that former Manchester United defender Mitchell is also on the club’s radar, having been training with the Wearsiders.

The 23-year-old was released by [the Old Trafford club earlier this summer](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/demetri-mitchell/profil/spieler/258886) but, whilst Sunderland are keen, it has now emerged that [Luton](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-8630895/Manchester-United-defender-Max-Taylor-talks-MK-Dons-loan-move.html) are also determined to land the left-back.

The Hatters finished 19th in the Championship last season after [fighting off the threat of relegation](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/luton-town/spielplan/verein/1031) and their manager Nathan Jones is seemingly keen to bolster his squad ahead of next term.

Mitchell has been [afflicted by injury problems](https://www.manutd.com/en/news/detail/demi-mitchell-taking-first-steps-in-returning-to-training-after-injury) in his career could be a concern for Parkinson but, having developed through Manchester United’s academy and [played in the Premier League](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/demetri-mitchell/detaillierteleistungsdaten/spieler/258886), he could prove to be a shrewd acquisition for Sunderland if they can get him.

The chance to move to the Championship, however, would seemingly be a good one for the youngster, which unfortunately may give Luton the edge in the race for his signature.
