# Sunderland: Fans buzz at Carl Winchester call up

**Sunderland ace Carl Winchester has been [called up](https://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/sport/19624245.sunderlands-carl-winchester-called-northern-ireland-squad/) to Northern Ireland’s squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers.**

And, as to be expected, a number of Sunderland supporters have been sharing their positive thoughts to the news on social media.

Winchester already has [one](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/carl-winchester/leistungsdaten/spieler/169625) senior cap to his name for Northern Ireland which came [over a decade ago](https://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/sport/19624245.sunderlands-carl-winchester-called-northern-ireland-squad/) and will hopefully add to that in games against [Switzerland and Bulgaria](https://www.skysports.com/football/teams/northern-ireland/fixtures).

The 28-year-old has been a regular at right-back under Lee Johnson, [starting](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/carl-winchester/leistungsdaten/spieler/169625) every League One encounter so far. He’s been ranked in the top five Sunderland performers, as per [WhoScored](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/16/Show/England-Sunderland), with an average match rating of 7.11/10.

Winchester has also scored [three](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/carl-winchester/leistungsdaten/spieler/169625) times in the third-tier this season, and a number of supporters were quick to heap praise on him following his call up.
