# Sunderland: Fans delighted as Jermain Defoe set to rejoin Black Cats

**A number of Sunderland supporters have expressed their delight at the club re-signing veteran striker Jermaine Defoe.**

It has been an extremely busy few days at the Stadium of Light, following the [sacking](https://safc.com/news/team-news/2022/january/lee-johnson-leaves-sunderland-afc) of Lee Johnson as manager after a little over a year in charge.

That follows on from Saturday’s humiliating 6-0 defeat away to Bolton Wanderers in League One, acting as a mighty blow to their promotion chances.

In terms of transfer news, there has only been one place to focus on deadline day, with Defoe on the brink of a move back to Sunderland \[via Keith Downie on [Twitter](https://twitter.com/SkySports_Keith/status/1488122773234925569?s=20&t=YcZsHdSTHCIL83ZXtAMuVA)\], having left Rangers earlier this month.

The 39-year-old spent two years with the Black Cats between 2015 and 2017, [scoring 37 goals in 93 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jermain-defoe/alletore/spieler/3875) and proving to be a popular figure at the club.
