# Sunderland: Peterborough United join Sammie Szmodics race

**Sunderland have been joined by Peterborough United in their interest of Bristol City attacking midfielder Sammie Szmodics, according to [Peterborough Telegraph.](https://www.peterboroughtoday.co.uk/sport/football/peterborough-united/peterborough-united-retain-interest-szmodics-despite-broom-arrival-and-squad-numbers-released-tuesday-2957649)**

Black Cats boss Phil Parkinson will be fully aware of the pressure on his shoulders heading in to the new season after failing to secure a promotion place, finishing eighth in the League One table.

One area that desperately needs improving is in attack, having limited options in terms of goalscorers at the Stadium of Light which include [Will Grigg](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/will-grigg/profil/spieler/106676) and [Charlie Wyke.](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/charlie-wyke/profil/spieler/163535) A whole host of players have been linked to the club, including former striker [Danny Graham, who is now training at the Academy of Light.](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/sunderland-transfer-rumours/sunderland-danny-graham-training/)

Aside from the interest shown in Graham, Szmodics has also emerged as a potential summer signing.

Valued at [£135,000 by website Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sammie-szmodics/profil/spieler/292139), Szmodics could hand Parkinson a cheap option to bolster his attacking options, however, Peterborough are now keen to pursue a permanent move.

Peterborough boss, Darren Ferguson, has [admitted](https://www.peterboroughtoday.co.uk/sport/football/peterborough-united/peterborough-united-retain-interest-szmodics-despite-broom-arrival-and-squad-numbers-released-tuesday-2957649) his side would be interested in a move for Szmodics: “*We are 95% there with the squad, I can’t tell you who the last place is for, but if the opportunity to sign Sammie arose we would of course be interested.”*

Peterborough’s interest in Szmodics will not bother Sunderland too much as they seem to have moved towards a move for Danny Graham as they look to add another goal-scoring threat to the squad.

Graham offers a shed load of experience to the Black Cats side and with his emergence at training, it seems a matter of time before he signs on the dotted line.

That said, Szmodics is a different type of player as he is not an out and out striker, but more of a number 10 or attacking midfielder. If they could get him in as well as Graham it would surely be shrewd business, given he scored [four goals and provided four assists](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sammie-szmodics/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/292139) in just 10 appearances in League One for the Posh last season.
