# Sunderland: Phil Parkinson provides Aiden McGeady update

**Sunderland boss Phil Parkinson has provided an [update](https://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/sport/18695311.phil-parkinson-confirms-arbenit-xhemajli-deal-sunderland/) on the future of the Irish attacker Aiden McGeady as his Stadium of Light spell looks set to come to an end.**

As the summer transfer window opened up, a number of first team players departed Wearside, with first-choice keeper Jon McLaughlin being arguably the highest profile player to leave, moving to [Scottish Premiership side Rangers.](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/53155069)

One Black Cats player whose future is yet to be decided is McGeady with the [92-cap](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/aiden-mcgeady/nationalmannschaft/spieler/21333/verein_id/3509) Republic of Ireland international returning to Wearside following his loan spell with Charlton last term.

The [£653,000-valued](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/aiden-mcgeady/profil/spieler/21333) attacker returned to training with the Black Cats’ under-23s earlier this summer but a recent calf injury has now limited his involvement and [Northern Echo](https://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/sport/18686242.sunderland-make-decisions-arbenit-xhemajli-aiden-mcgeady/) have since reported that he will not be part of Sunderland’s plans moving forward.

Since his arrival at Sunderland, McGeady has featured in no fewer than [98 games, scoring 27 goals and supplying 13 assists](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/aiden-mcgeady/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/21333) in the process.

With the new season now upon us, Sunderland boss Parkinson has updated fans on the future of the winger.

*“The window is open until October, so there’s plenty of time, but we just feel that the time is right for Aiden to move on,”* [he said](https://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/sport/18695311.phil-parkinson-confirms-arbenit-xhemajli-deal-sunderland/). *“We’ve got young players in the squad in (Elliot) Embleton and Dan Neil in particular who we want to give an opportunity to this season.*

*“Aiden has got the opportunity to move on. He had an extended break because he’d been with Charlton, and unfortunately he came back training with the Under-23s and pulled his calf. At the moment, he’s not on the training pitch, so he needs to get that right. It shouldn’t take too long, and then hopefully there’s a move for him that he fancies and is right for all parties.”*

Sunderland face off against Bristol Rovers to open up the new League One season on September 12.

McGeady’s future lies elsewhere. Put simply, the club cannot really afford to keep the ex-Celtic man due to the [salary cap](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/53696424) that has been introduced in League One, indeed back in 2018 it was [reported](https://www.dreamteamfc.com/c/news-gossip/420723/sunderland-player-wages-lee-cattermole/) that the Ireland man earned £31,000-per-week.

The winger has one-year left on his current contract and it remains to be seen if a move will develop this summer.
