# Sunderland: Remi Matthews deal set to be announced

**Sunderland are set to announce the signing of former Bolton Wanderers goalkeeper Remi Matthews, according to [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/exclusive-sunderland-set-to-sign-player-whos-just-quit-bolton-wanderers/).**

Black Cats manager Phil Parkinson saw former first team ‘keeper Jon McLaughlin leave the club this summer after his contract expired as he [completed a move to Scottish Premiership side Rangers](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/53155069) two months ago.

The Wearsiders have been linked with three potential replacements for McLaughlin, with interest in Wolverhampton Wanderers’ [Matija Sarkic](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/sunderland-transfer-rumours/sunderland-matija-sarkic-loan-rumours/) and Chelsea’s [Nathan Baxter](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/sunderland-transfer-rumours/sunderland-nathan-baxter-transfer-target-loan/) as well as Matthews, and it now seems that a move for the latter has entered the final stages.

Matthews made [33 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/remi-matthews/profil/spieler/196722) for Bolton last season in League One but was helpless in seeing the Trotters suffer relegation to England’s fourth tier, conceding a total of 66 goals in the process (two per game).

[Released during the summer,](https://www.theboltonnews.co.uk/sport/18544042.bolton-announce-retained-list-14-players-contract/) the Norfolk-born ‘keeper began his playing career with Norwich City before having loan spells with the likes of Burton Albion, Doncaster Rovers and Plymouth Argyle, as per [Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/remi-matthews/transfers/spieler/196722).

[Chronicle Live](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/sunderland-facing-uphill-battle-land-18790355) reported last week that Sunderland face stiff competition from a number of Championship clubs for the 26-year-old’s signature but [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/exclusive-sunderland-set-to-sign-player-whos-just-quit-bolton-wanderers/) now claim that a deal is set to be announced by the Wearsiders.

Quite why it has taken Sunderland this long to find a replacement for McLaughlin is a pertinent question.

One main issue within the squad was finding a replacement and that is now set to be resolved soon, but there may be some initial scepticism about Matthews given his form for Bolton last season in their relegation.
