# Sunderland: Remi Matthews deal set to be announced

**[East Anglian Daily Times](https://www.eadt.co.uk/sport/ipswich-town-close-to-goalkeeper-signing-1-6791941) have reported that Sunderland are set to announce a deal for goalkeeper Remi Matthews.**

Phil Parkinson, boss of Sunderland, has his work cut out this summer to bolster his squad options and bounce back after [two successive failures to get out of League One.](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/afc-sunderland/platzierungen/verein/289)

An area in which Parkinson will need to address is in between the sticks after seeing last season’s number one Jon McLaughlin leave for Scottish Premiership side Rangers in June on a [free transfer.](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/53155069)

A potential replacement for the Scottish ‘keeper has [emerged](https://www.eadt.co.uk/sport/sunderland-want-remi-matthews-1-6784112) in Matthews with the stopper having [played under Parkinson](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/remi-matthews/leistungsdatentrainer/spieler/196722/plus/0/verein/355/trainer_id/3540) at Bolton Wanderers.

Matthews made [33 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/remi-matthews/profil/spieler/196722) for the Trotters last season in League One, conceding a total of 66 goals and keeping eight clean sheets, before being [released during the summer.](https://www.theboltonnews.co.uk/sport/18544042.bolton-announce-retained-list-14-players-contract/)

The Norfolk-born ‘keeper began his playing career with Norwich City before having loan spells with the likes of Burton Albion, Doncaster Rovers and Plymouth Argyle, as per [Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/remi-matthews/transfers/spieler/196722).

And, it is now being reported that Sunderland will be added to that list with [EADT](https://www.eadt.co.uk/sport/ipswich-town-close-to-goalkeeper-signing-1-6791941) also confirming that Ipswich Town’s interest has now ended.

A completed deal could now be announced at Sunderland, meaning interest in Wolverhampton Wanderers’ [Matija Sarkic](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/sunderland-transfer-rumours/sunderland-matija-sarkic-loan-rumours/) and Chelsea’s [Nathan Baxter](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/sunderland-transfer-rumours/sunderland-nathan-baxter-transfer-target-loan/) will come to an end.

Whether or not Matthews is the best option out of himself, Sarkic and Baxter remains to be seen but you have to feel that Parkinson’s previous link with the ‘keeper has helped this deal go through, should the report be believed.

Replacing McLaughlin is important and the sooner it is done, the better. Matthews has plenty of experience in League One with [70 appearances and 21 clean sheets](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/remi-matthews/detaillierteleistungsdaten/spieler/196722) in total, whilst also playing 18 times in the Championship.

With him being valued at £270k, this looks a decent addition on a free.
