# Sunderland: Callum McFadzean signs one-year deal with Black Cats

**Sunderland have confirmed the signing of Callum McFadzean on a one-year contract [via the club’s official website.](https://www.safc.com/news/team-news/2020/october/callum-mcfadzean-signs)**

Manager Phil Parkinson has made significant movements in the transfer window, [bringing in no fewer than seven players](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/afc-sunderland/transfers/verein/289), whilst Jack Diamond returned from an impressive loan spell with Harrogate Town.

Having started the season in fine form, the Wearsiders sit [fifth](https://www.skysports.com/league-1-table) in the League One standings and Parkinson has further enhanced his squad with yet another addition to his ranks.

### McFadzean arrives on a free transfer

Versatile wing-back McFadzean saw his contract come to an end with Plymouth Argyle over the summer and he has [now penned a one-year deal with Sunderland.](https://www.safc.com/news/team-news/2020/october/callum-mcfadzean-signs)

The former Sheffield United, Chesterfield, Burton Albion, Bury and Stevenage player appeared [25 times](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/callum-mcfadzean/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/134422) in League Two last season and helped Plymouth gain promotion to League One.

Upon his move to the Stadium of Light, the 26-year-old [said](https://www.safc.com/news/team-news/2020/october/callum-mcfadzean-signs): “I’m delighted to be here. As soon as I knew Sunderland were interested, I was desperate to get it done and I can’t wait to get started.”

Parkinson added: “I would like to welcome Callum to the club. This is a position we’ve been looking to strengthen for a while, and he will bring further competition to the squad.”

### Do Sunderland have the squad to gain promotion after Parkinson’s bargain hunt?

Looking at Sunderland’s [squad](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/afc-sunderland/kader/verein/289), it now looks like they have enough cover in every area. Of course, a lot of that will depend on how well the players perform, but Parkinson has done well to build a squad full of options.

McFadzean’s arrival will not only provide competition to Denver Hume at left wing-back but could also potentially see the likes of Aiden O’Brien and Diamond [pushed for a place on the left side of attack as the former Plymouth man can play in that position.](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/afc-sunderland/kader/verein/289)

A lot of the praise which could be directed at Parkinson will ultimately depend on how well Sunderland do this season, but [bringing in eight players without spending a pound on transfer fees](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/afc-sunderland/transfers/verein/289) must be seen as an accomplishment, especially as the financial situation surrounding English Football League clubs at the current time is [problematic](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/football-finance-expert-very-worried-19017971).
