# Sunderland: ‘Seven to eight new signings’ expected this summer

**Sunderland are expected to make [seven to eight](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/gentlemans-agreements-likely-rule-sunderlands-18546491) new signings this summer as boss Phil Parkinson looks to rebuild his squad.**

The Black Cats’ 2019/20 season ended with a failure to gain automatic promotion or a play-off place in League One, finishing eighth in the standings. Manager Parkinson will look to the summer transfer window to build a squad capable of improving on that placing next term and potentially return to the Championship.

A whole host of first team players have left in the last few weeks due to their contracts coming to an end, and it has [now been claimed](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/gentlemans-agreements-likely-rule-sunderlands-18546491) that numerous players will move to the Stadium of Light this summer.

With speculation developing on who Sunderland could bring in, seeing the likes of [Jay Spearing](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/sunderland-linked-move-ex-phil-18544716) linked in the last few days, [Chronicle Live](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/gentlemans-agreements-likely-rule-sunderlands-18546491) have now given their thoughts.

The article from Craig Johns stated: *‘Phil Parkinson is targeting seven to eight new signings at Sunderland this summer, but few are expected to join officially anytime soon.’*

The report also goes on to add that a “gentleman’s agreement” may need to be made for those players attached to clubs due to the current financial situation and an [uncertainty over funds and wage restrictions.](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2020/05/19/football-league-salary-caps-25m-league-one-125m-league-two-proposed/#:~:text=League%20Two%20proposed-,Football%20League%20salary%20caps%20of%20%C2%A32.5m%20for%20League,m%20for%20League%20Two%20proposed&text=Squad%20salary%20caps%20of%20just,pay%20their%20players%20on%20time.)

The size of Sunderland’s transfer kitty [is not yet known](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/gentlemans-agreements-likely-rule-sunderlands-18546491), which means that a number of free agents could come in, but if Parkinson wants to maximise his spending this summer, he could select a few under-performing players to sell.

A very interesting and eventful summer could lay in store on Wearside if the projected number of new signings ends up materialising.
