Journalist Alan Nixon has said that Sunderland target Jay Spearing will ‘probably’ receive a League One move.
Nixon, who held a Q&A session with his followers over on social media platform Twitter over the weekend, was quizzed by one fan on the future of Spearing and he replied that there is “a lot of interest” in the 31-year-old.
There’s a lot of interest in Spearing. Probably get League One. Devitt a strong chance. https://t.co/YTYAK84lHq

Black Cats manager Phil Parkinson will likely be seeking to bolster his squad ahead of the new season. A second successive failure to gain promotion from League One will likely increase the pressure on him to deliver and he has already been linked with a number of players, including former Bolton Wanderers midfielder Spearing, as per The Sun (5 July, page 61).
Spearing, who is valued at £540,000 by Transfermarkt, began his professional career with Liverpool before embarking on spells with Leicester City, Bolton, Blackburn Rovers and most recently Blackpool.
Having recently left the Tangerines, he is said to be looking for a new challenge and that has now led Nixon to claim that he will ‘probably end up in League One’, whilst the former Liverpool midfielder has also been linked with a move to Tranmere Rovers and Bolton Wanderers (The Sun [5 July, page 61]), both of whom were relegated to League Two this year.
Spearing is likely to sign for a League One club but it remains to be seen if he is what Sunderland need. At 31, perhaps Parkinson should try to target younger players who could build a lasting legacy at the Stadium of Light.
Spearing has plenty of experience, including some at Premier League and European level, but whether he could channel that into a positive if he goes to Sunderland is up for debate.
