Sunderland have been overtaken by Blackpool in the race to sign Rotherham striker Jerry Yates, according to Football Insider.
The interest shown by the Black Cats in Yates was first reported by Football Insider with Sunderland boss Phil Parkinson keen to build a side capable of gaining automatic promotion next term.
With the League One season now officially over, focus is firmly on bouncing back after missing out on promotion to the Championship for the second consecutive season.
With Sunderland seemingly leading the line with their interest, it has now been claimed that Blackpool are in pole position to make a move with a ‘recruitment source’ telling Football Insider that they now lead the race.
A potential move for Yates would hand Parkinson a goal threat next term as he looks to bounce back after what has turned out to be a disappointing season.
Blackpool, who finished 13th in the League One table will also be looking to rebuild ahead of next term.
If Sunderland lose out to Blackpool in the race to sign Yates, fans of the club will be even more angered than they already are.
It has proved to be a disaster of a season for the Wearside club, and Parkinson must get things correct this summer to avenge what has been nothing but disappointment.
A striker is certainly needed, particularly if Chris Maguire rejects the contract offer he has received and leaves the club. Indeed, he has been crucial in their attack this term, netting 11 and assisting 13 (Transfermarkt).
All connected with Sunderland will hope that they can somehow snare Yates from under the noses of the Tangerines.
