Newly-promoted Premier League side Leeds United are keen to sign Sunderland academy youngster Daniel Neil, according to Football Insider.
Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds side secured automatic promotion to England’s top flight last week and preparations are now being put in place at Elland Road for next season.
Compared to Leeds, Sunderland have endured a difficult campaign, failing for a second consecutive year to gain promotion from League One and suffering a number of off-the-pitch problems.
One of those problems is the growing number of young players who have called time on a spell at the club’s Academy of Light.
It now looks like another young player is set to leave the Wearside club, with Neil gaining interest from Leeds.
A source close to Football Insider has apparently claimed that the Whites are attempting to lure the England youth international to Elland Road this summer.
The report goes on to state that Leeds officials believe the 18-year-old is capable of stepping up from Sunderland’s under-23 side to the Premier League.
Neil, who has made just one senior appearance, is said to be available for a six-figure transfer fee which would hand the Wearsiders compensation for his training and development costs, as per Football Insider.
Another young player looks set to leave the Academy of Light and fans of the club could well feel further angered.
A long list of players have now left Sunderland over the last few months, and whilst the Black Cats will receive compensation, questions need to be asked on why so many youngsters are opting to leave the club.
Neil seems like a real talent if Premier League returnees Leeds are interested but surely a buy-back clause or sell-on fee would be a smart idea to include in the deal.
