Sunderland transfer target Demetri Mitchell is currently on trial with the club’s League One rivals Blackpool.
After being released by Premier League side Manchester United earlier this summer, Mitchell spent time training with the Black Cats as a potential move to the Stadium of Light continued to be discussed.
During his time with United, the £225,000-valued defender appeared just once at first team level whilst also represented the Red Devils’ under-23 side on 25 occasions (as per Transfermarkt).
Available on a free transfer, the young left-back seemingly looked a good option for Sunderland, but it seems that he is on trial elsewhere.
Mitchell featured in the second half of Blackpool’s 3-3 draw with Premier League side Everton on Saturday and is expected to feature again tomorrow night when the Seasiders face Championship side Blackburn Rovers.
Aside from Sunderland and Blackpool’s interest, Championship side Luton have also been linked with a move for the ex-Old Trafford youngster.
Sunderland’s interest in the 22-year-old could now diminish, especially after completing a deal for former Everton defender Morgan Feeney last Friday.
Mitchell’s potential move to Sunderland now seems hard to envisage, particularly with him on trial at Blackpool and Feeney arriving at the Stadium of Light.
With the salary cap introduced in the English Football League, many deals are now harder than usual to agree and complete, so Phil Parkinson will need to be shrewd with any potential signings that he targets, and Mitchell is now starting to seem out of reach.
