The Wearsiders suffered a second consecutive failure to gain promotion and manager Phil Parkinson has gradually been adding new additions to his squad ahead of the 2020/21 season.
With further transfer activity expected at the Stadium of Light, interest in Szmodics has emerged with the 24-year-old has recently falling out of favour with Bristol City.
And, it now seems Sunderland’s League One rivals are keen to pursue a second move.
Peterborough Telegraph reported Ferguson’s interest in the midfielder and he has now gone on record to comment on the matter.
He said: “There is nothing for me to say about Sammie.
“He was here and did well last season and everyone is aware he’s a player who would be of big interest to us if he was available, but nothing has changed as far as I’m concerned.
“I didn’t know anything about him not being in Bristol City’s squad.”
Valued at £135,000 by website Transfermarkt, Szmodics could hand either Sunderland or Peterborough a cheap option as the new season fast approaches.
It does seem that should Szmodics become available this summer, Sunderland will face fierce competition from the Posh for his signature. Ferguson may fancy his chances of pipping the Black Cats too, given the attacking midfielder has already spent time at London Road.
It will be interesting to see how this one develops in the coming weeks.
