Sunderland: Positive news emerges as new keeper hunt begins - Sunderland Transfer Rumours

Sunderland have received positive news in their hunt for a new goalkeeper, with Matija Sarkic set to leave Aston Villa this summer on a free transfer.

Sarkic, who arrived at Villa in September 2015 from Belgian giants Anderlecht, is set to leave the club this summer when his contract expires.

Since joining the Claret and Blue side, Sarkic has been sent out on four separate loan spells with his latest coming at Scottish Premiership side Livingston, where he gained valuable playing time and made 18 appearances.

Which Sunderland manager has the best win percentage of all time?

Emerging as a potential summer signing for Sunderland, Sarkic could come in to replace current keeper Jon McLaughlin, who is expected to leave the Stadium of Light on a free transfer this summer.

Free to leave Villa Park this summer, Sarkic is expected to call time on his underwhelming spell at the club and Football Insider have now claimed that the youngster could announce his next club in the coming week.

Sarkic, who was recalled from his loan spell at Livingston in January, was expected to provide cover for injured stopper Tom Heaton, but Villa’s decision to sign Pepe Reina halted such hope for the 22-year-old.

Jack Grealish joined Aston Villa at the age of 6?

Sunderland, who will undoubtedly need to find a shrewd replacement for McLaughlin, have been linked with a move for Sarkic previously.

Sarkic obviously has some talent, developing with Anderlecht and being signed to Villa at such a young age, but it just has not worked out for him in the Midlands.

Impressing at Livingston, where he kept seven clean sheets in 18 games, there is no reason why he could not move to Sunderland and become a key member of the Black Cats’ squad.

Being available for nothing is also a major plus for the Wearside outfit, who may well be facing a third season in League One and therefore their budget will be limited. Added to that, there continues to be some financial instability at the club, with Stewart Donald thought to be keen on selling up (Chronicle).

With that in mind, Sarkic on a free could well be an ideal way for Sunderland to fill the gap between the sticks.
