Sunderland have been joined by Premier League duo Burnley and Sheffield United in the race to sign Hartlepool midfielder Josh Hawkes.
After missing out on gaining promotion to the Championship this season, Black Cats boss Phil Parkinson will be looking to bring in a number of new faces this summer as he looks to improve on their eighth-placed League One finish.
Hawkes, who has been impressing for Hartlepool of late, now has several suitors he could potentially join this summer along with Sunderland.
Burnley and Sheffield United have now emerged with interest, with Middlesbrough, Huddersfield Town, Hull City and Barnsley also tracking the 21-year-old.
Despite that interest from English clubs, the midfielder is said to be considering a move to Portugal, where Braga have shown interest, as per TEAMtalk.
Hawkes has certainly made an impression during his time at Hartlepool and a move to Portugal does now seem quite plausible.
Sunderland will look to sign a number of players this summer as they seek to gain promotion from League One to the Championship at the third time of asking. Missing out on Hawkes is likely to be a blow, although the Black Cats will surely have other transfer targets in mind.
