Sunderland transfer target Matija Sarkic has confirmed his departure from Premier League side Aston Villa via Twitter.
Black Cats manager Phil Parkinson will look to make a number of changes this summer as he attempts to build a squad capable of gaining promotion to the Championship.
Since the end of the 2019/2020 season, a number of first team players have left the club, with former number one goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin having departed the club for Scottish Premiership giants Rangers.
Sarkic, the 23-year-old ‘keeper who joined Villa in September 2015 from Belgian giants Anderlecht, emerged as a potential summer signing for the Wearsiders after he entered the final few months of his contract.
With the Premier League season now over, Sarkic has confirmed that he is available on a free transfer, seeing his time at Villa Park come to an end.
What a journey! It’s been a great 5 years at @AVFCOfficial . Full of good memories and experiences.
Thank you to all my team mates, everyone at the club and all the villains! Good luck tomorrow pic.twitter.com/d7k4yrmsXl

Sarkic would be an ideal addition for Sunderland following McLaughlin’s departure but, given that his brother has moved to Blackpool, it could see the Wearside club behind the Tangerines as favourites to sign him.
Replacing McLaughlin is a must-do this summer for Parkinson but little has been done as yet to see that materialise.
