Sunderland are expected to make seven to eight new signings this summer as boss Phil Parkinson looks to rebuild his squad.
The Black Cats’ 2019/20 season ended with a failure to gain automatic promotion or a play-off place in League One, finishing eighth in the standings. Manager Parkinson will look to the summer transfer window to build a squad capable of improving on that placing next term and potentially return to the Championship.
A whole host of first team players have left in the last few weeks due to their contracts coming to an end, and it has now been claimed that numerous players will move to the Stadium of Light this summer.
The article from Craig Johns stated: ‘Phil Parkinson is targeting seven to eight new signings at Sunderland this summer, but few are expected to join officially anytime soon.’
The report also goes on to add that a “gentleman’s agreement” may need to be made for those players attached to clubs due to the current financial situation and an uncertainty over funds and wage restrictions.
The size of Sunderland’s transfer kitty is not yet known, which means that a number of free agents could come in, but if Parkinson wants to maximise his spending this summer, he could select a few under-performing players to sell.
A very interesting and eventful summer could lay in store on Wearside if the projected number of new signings ends up materialising.
