# Sunderland: Two-year deal agreed with Bailey Wright

**Sunderland have agreed a two-year contract with defender Bailey Wright, according to [Football Insider.](https://www.footballinsider247.com/exclusive-sunderland-to-announce-new-signing-after-breakthrough-in-talks/)**

The Australian-born defender became a free agent after the 2019/20 season came to an end, seeing his [contract expire](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/bailey-wright/profil/spieler/147419) with Championship side Bristol City.

Having moved to England in 2009 to join [Preston North End](https://web.archive.org/web/20100422005436/http://www.pnefc.net/page/NewsDetail/0%2C%2C10362~2028252%2C00.html), the centre-back had enjoyed moderate success in the English Football League having gained a successful promotion with the Lilywhites from League One to the Championship.

After that success, Wright would then move to [Bristol City](https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/defender-bailey-wright-signs-for-bristol-city-from-preston-north-end/story-30035647-detail/story.html) in 2017 but his time at Ashton Gate saw him struggle to find regular first team football and led to a subsequent loan to the Stadium of Light in January.

After a [handful of appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/bailey-wright/profil/spieler/147419) for the Black Cats, Wright is now set to sign a permanent deal which Football Insider have claimed will be for [24 months.](https://www.footballinsider247.com/exclusive-sunderland-to-announce-new-signing-after-breakthrough-in-talks/)

The report also goes on to say that a deal is close to being announced with the defender currently enjoying a [holiday in Ibiza.](https://www.sunderlandecho.com/sport/football/sunderland-afc/sunderland-afc-transfer-and-takeover-news-live-leeds-united-linked-highly-rated-cats-youngster-2920390)

Wright would prove to be Sunderland boss Phil Parkinson’s first arrival of the summer if the move goes through without any problems.

Signing Wright is at least a start for Sunderland and Parkinson, but fans will be hoping for a lot more in the coming weeks as pre-season edges closer, especially given they have lost seven players already ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sunderland-afc/transfers/verein/289/plus/0?saison_id=2020&pos=&detailpos=&w_s=)).

The Black Cats are in need of a drastic changes, especially if they are to improve on an eighth placed finish. But this is a positive first step, given Wright helped the team to [four clean sheets](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/bailey-wright/profil/spieler/147419) in five appearances last season.
