# Sunderland: Wolves to scupper potential PL keeper bid

**Sunderland could receive a transfer blow as Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers are growing closer to a summer move for Aston Villa keeper Matija Sarkic ([The Sun](https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/)(12 July, page 61)).**

Sarkic joined Villa in [September 2015](https://www.espn.in/football/story/2591918/aston-villa-sign-goalkeeper-sarkic-from-anderlecht) from Belgian side Anderlecht, but his contract came to an end on June 30 and his availability is now prompting interest from a number of clubs.

Since moving to England, he has been sent out on [four loan spells away](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/matija-sarkic/transfers/spieler/293257) from Villa, with his latest coming at Scottish Premiership side Livingston, where he [featured regularly](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/matija-sarkic/leistungsdaten/spieler/293257).

With Sunderland [said to be keen](https://www.expressandstar.com/sport/football/wolverhampton-wanderers-fc/2020/06/09/wolves-in-talks-to-sign-villa-keeper-matija-sarkic/) on the youngster, boss Phil Parkinson has now seemingly missed out as Wolves look to make a contract offer.

The Sun goes in to depth on Wolves’ supposed interest, claiming they are keen to see him compete to provide back up to Rui Patricio.

Sunderland, who will desperately need to replace Jon McLaughlin, who left to join Scottish Premiership side Rangers, may be priced out of competing with a contract offer against Wolves, given that [financial problems are set to occur](https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/52371373) for a number of English Football League clubs amid the pandemic.

This is no doubt a blow for the Black Cats. Sarkic showed great potential in his latest loan at Livingston, keeping six clean sheets in just 14 appearances, conceding only 18 goals ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/matija-sarkic/profil/spieler/293257)).

He was supposedly identified as a potential McLaughlin replacement and was more than affordable given he is available on a free transfer.

But if Wolves are serious with their interest, unfortunately Sunderland are in no position to compete with a club two divisions higher than themselves. It seems likely that they will need to look elsewhere to fill the void between the sticks.
