# Sunderland: Matija Sarkic interest could be thwarted by Wolves joining transfer race for goalkeeper

**[Reported interest](https://www.expressandstar.com/sport/football/wolverhampton-wanderers-fc/2020/06/09/wolves-in-talks-to-sign-villa-keeper-matija-sarkic/) from Wolverhampton Wanderers for Aston Villa goalkeeper Matija Sarkic could end Sunderland’s pursuit of the player.**

Sarkic, who joined Villa in [September 2015](https://www.espn.in/football/story/2591918/aston-villa-sign-goalkeeper-sarkic-from-anderlecht) from Belgian giants Anderlecht, is free to leave the club this summer as his current contract comes to an end. Since moving to England, he has been sent out on [four loan spells away](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/matija-sarkic/transfers/spieler/293257) from Villa, with his latest coming at Scottish Premiership side Livingston, where he [featured regularly](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/matija-sarkic/leistungsdaten/spieler/293257).

Emerging as a potential summer signing for the Black Cats, Sarkic would seemingly be a good option to replace current stopper Jon McLaughlin, [who is expected to leave the Stadium of Light on a free transfer this summer.](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/sunderland-goalkeeper-jon-mclaughlin-addresses-18206358)

However, despite interest from the Stadium of Light, it has now emerged that Premier League side [Wolves have made a move](https://www.expressandstar.com/sport/football/wolverhampton-wanderers-fc/2020/06/09/wolves-in-talks-to-sign-villa-keeper-matija-sarkic/), meaning the youngster could remain in England’s top flight. The Molineux club’s interest could hand Sarkic a chance to remain in the Midlands and look to gain some minutes with a team chasing a second successive season of European football.

Sunderland, who will desperately need to replace McLaughlin, may be priced out of any deal, given that [financial problems are set to occur](https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/52371373) for a number of English Football League clubs amid the coronavirus pandemic.

It seems a bit strange that Wolves have come in for Sarkic given his struggles for recognition at Villa Park but maybe they see something in the 22-year-old that Aston Villa don’t.

Sunderland would almost certainly lose out in a two-way battle with Wolves to sign the keeper and you have to wonder if their reluctance to hand McLaughlin a new deal means they are in bigger financial trouble than previously believed.
