Swansea City Record Transfers

Swansea City have been big spenders over the years, especially during their seven-year spell in the Premier League from 2011-2018. Six transfers have been brought in by the Swans for over £10m, and one man in particular broke the clubs transfer record in 2017-18 and became the first player to arrive for over £20m.

In the summer of 2017, Ghanain international Andre Ayew arrived at Swansea from West Ham United, for just over £20m. This was the winger’s second spell at the club, having been sold to the Hammers in 2016 for upwards of £21m. Ayew’s new record arrival fee broke the previous season’s record of Borja Baston who was brought in from LaLiga giants Atletico Madrid for over £16m.

In his first season, the Spanish striker started just four matches, and the following summer he was loaned out to Malaga for one year as both clubs were relegated from their respective leagues. Once again the following season, Borja was loaned out to Alaves and returned for the Swans ahead of their current 2019-20 campaign. Borja joined Premier League side Aston Villa on a free transfer on the final day of the 2020 January transfer window, and the Swans transfer nightmare was over with a £16m+ loss.

Along with Andre Ayew, English central midfielder Sam Clucas joined the Swans from Hull City for almost £15m, making him the clubs third record signing. Ivorian striker Wilfried Bony was originally the club’s record signing back in 2013-14 when he arrived from Eredivisie side Vitesse for £14.40m. Bony scored almost one in two for the Swans before catching the eye of Premier League rivals Manchester City, where he left for a massive £29m fee just after two seasons at the club.

Having spent the majority of his time on the Manchester City bench, Bony returned to Swansea in 2017 for a decreased sum of £11.70m which makes him the clubs fourth and fifth record signings in history.

Famous Swansea City Transfers

One of the most famous transfers in Swansea City’s history was the arrival of Icelandic playmaker Gylfi Sigurdsson who joined the Swans from Tottenham Hotspur back in 2014. The young attacking midfielder racked up an impressive 106 games for the Swans, scoring 27, and in the summer of 2017 he caught the eye of Premier League rivals Everton.

Sigurdsson left Swansea for an incredible club record fee of almost £45m, making him one of the highest transfers in Premier League history also. You do not want to miss out on the latest Swansea City transfer rumours from the Championship here!
