# Chelsea: Swooping for Thiago Silva is a no-brainer for Frank Lampard \[Opinion\]

**Chelsea are interested in signing Paris Saint-Germain veteran Thiago Silva this summer.**

[Sky Sports](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11668/12055335/thiago-silva-chelsea-close-to-signing-defender-on-one-year-deal) have claimed that the Blues are closing in on a deal for the Brazilian centre-back, who will become Frank Lampard’s [first defensive signing](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fc-chelsea/transfers/verein/631) of the summer window.

Silva’s contract with PSG ended following his side’s Champions League final defeat to Bayern Munich last night.

Chelsea have highlighted their defence as an area of concern heading into next season. Lampard has emerged onto the transfer scene with a ruthless attitude along with the blessing and [financial support of Roman Abramovich.](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/chelsea-fc-transfer-rumours/more-chelsea-signings-to-come-roman-abramovich-transfer-budget-revealed/)

Goalkeeper [Kepa Arrizabalaga](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/chelsea-fc-transfer-rumours/chelsea-frank-lampard-offload-kepa-transfer-rumours-doubts/) has been highlighted as one of the players that the club want to replace, but Lampard’s defenders are also a worry. It seems that a complete defensive makeover is on the cards for Chelsea, who could be bidding farewell to a [large chunk of their defensive roster](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-8588445/Chelsea-FOUR-defenders-sale-Frank-Lampard-plans-clear-raise-funds.html) in the next few weeks.

Silva is available on a free contract, which will be a refreshing change from the [recent lavish spending](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fc-chelsea/transfers/verein/631) at Stamford Bridge. The 35-year-old is likely to pen a one-year deal with the Blues, according to [Sky Sports](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11668/12055335/thiago-silva-chelsea-close-to-signing-defender-on-one-year-deal).

Signing such a well-established senior player on a free contract would be excellent business for Chelsea, who have taken a [youthful approach](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/premier-league/startseite/wettbewerb/GB1) to their starting lineups as of late. Silva has made a total of [510 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/thiago-silva/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/29241) across his career, netting 32 goals and 11 assists along with his impressive medal count.

The Brazil international has won seven French titles with PSG and seven French Super Cups, along with many other impressive accolades (via [Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/thiago-silva/erfolge/spieler/29241)).

Silva is currently earning a reported £330,500 per week (via [wageindicator.co.uk](https://wageindicator.co.uk/pay/vip-celebrity-salary/thiago-silva)) but, if Chelsea can offload several senior players to balance the books, they should free up more than enough of the wage bill to cover his large salary.
