# Everton: Lampard must start Calvert-Lewin vs Newcastle

**This is part of The Transfer Tavern’s *Talking Tactics* series, where we analyse two changes the manager should make in their upcoming fixture.**

Everton are in desperate need of a win to give them some hope of staying up come the end of the Premier League season.

They have only managed to pick up the full three points on [one](https://www.evertonfc.com/results) occasion in the top flight since their 2-1 victory at home to Arsenal back in December, and really are in freefall, with Newcastle United at Goodison Park now looking like a must-win with some [daunting](https://www.evertonfc.com/fixtures) league fixtures coming up.

Nonetheless, Frank Lampard simply has to get his team right, and we feel that there are two particular changes that he must make.

### Calvert-Lewin starts

Speaking in his pre-game press conference ahead of the match, Lampard admitted that Dominic Calvert-Lewin will have to be ‘[assessed](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/frank-lampard-offers-dominic-calvert-23406877)‘ after taking ill in their 1-0 loss at home to Wolves last time out.

If it is just a bug, then he should have time to recover, and if he is available, he simply needs to be thrown in from the start.

Calvert-Lewin has of course struggled with injuries this season, but his [three](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/dominic-calvert-lewin/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/306024/plus/0?saison=2021&verein=&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=&trainer_id=) goals in the first three games showed what he is all about. The Merseyside club have failed to score in their last [four](https://www.evertonfc.com/results) league matches, and so the striker must be risked in the hope that he can get on the scoresheet.

Having [missed out](https://twitter.com/England/status/1504457564284719111) on the latest England squad as well, Calvert-Lewin is sure to have some extra fire in his belly, and so Lampard should unleash him from the start.

### Coleman axed

Seamus Coleman has been a faithful servant and captain for the Toffees over a number of years, but now is the time for him to be ruthlessly dropped.

In truth, he has struggled massively of late, ranking among their three worst players against both [Wolves](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/everton-fc-news/everton-wolves-player-ratings-kenny-coleman-doucoure/) and [Tottenham Hotspur](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/everton-fc-news/everton-pickford-coleman-and-keanes-nightmare-performances-vs-spurs/), with Jamie Carragher even going as far as to claim that he was part of a ‘[Championship back four](https://www.goodisonnews.com/2022/03/08/jamie-carragher-destroys-championship-everton-defence-after-5-0-thrashing-by-tottenham/)‘ after the 5-0 drubbing away at the latter.

With Jonjoe Kenny suspended after getting a red card against the Wanderers, the right-back position should be filled by Nathan Patterson, an exciting young Scotland international who has [barely had a kick](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/nathan-patterson/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/424015/plus/0?saison=2021&verein=29&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=&trainer_id=) since arriving from Glasgow Rangers in the January transfer window.

Coleman has been a great servant to the Blues, but at 33 years of age, his best days are sadly behind them.
