# Tottenham Hotspur: The 2 key players Jose Mourinho must keep this summer

**Tottenham’s form has dipped as of late after Jose Mourinho initially kicked off with a positive string of results at the beginning of his tenure for Spurs.** **With Christian Eriksen leaving for Inter Milan in January and Victor Wanyama recently completing a transfer to Montreal Impact, who are the two key players that the Portuguese manager should keep hold of this summer?**

**Hugo Lloris**

The Frenchman has been Tottenham’s number 1 since his transfer to the Lilywhites from Olympique Lyonnais in 2012. Stacking up [250 appearances](https://www.premierleague.com/players/4664/player/stats) in the league since then, Lloris has won the most games for Tottenham out of any Spurs player in the Premier League era with 147 wins \[via [Premier League](https://www.premierleague.com/stats/top/players/wins?se=-1&cl=21)\].

Throughout Lloris’ 250 games, he has kept [88 clean sheets](https://www.premierleague.com/players/4664/player/stats) in the league – often proving himself a world-class goalkeeper on occasion when called upon to pull off a must-need save, an example of this coming against Manchester City at the beginning of February.

Despite injuring himself at the beginning of the season in October after [dislocating his elbow](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/49963964) against Brighton, the Frenchman made a speedy recovery and earned back his place as Tottenham’s number 1.

Mourinho must do all he can to retain the services of Lloris. A World Cup-winning captain with bundles of experience in the Premier League, it is key for any team to have reliance and experience in goal.

**Heung-Min Son**

South Korean forward Heung-Min Son cost Tottenham [£22 million](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/34069477) in August 2015 from Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga – a steal in today’s [inflated transfer market](https://football-observatory.com/Transfer-market-inflation-continues-at-big-5).

[51 goals and 26 assists](https://www.premierleague.com/players/4999/Son-Heung-Min/stats) in the league later, the versatile forward has proven to be an important player under both Mauricio Pochettino and Mourinho. Despite his current injury, Son is Tottenham’s second-highest goalscorer in the Premier League this campaign, as well as recording the most assists and shots since the start of the season \[via [Premier League](https://www.premierleague.com/clubs/21/Tottenham-Hotspur/stats)\].

His injury in February was a costly one and since then Tottenham have been lacking upfront for goals and assists. For example, they netted just once in their recent FA Cup defeat to Norwich City and blanked in the 1-0 Champions League defeat to RB Leipzig. Prior, Son managed to score twice – including the winner – in the same game which he [fractured his arm](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/51547261), a 3-2 win over Aston Villa on the 16th February.

**Final Verdict**

If Tottenham and Mourinho want to continue to progress after this season – keeping both Lloris and Son will be as good business in the summer as any new signing would be. When players are performing well, it’s more important than ever to ensure their future.
