Arsenal’s defensive crisis could be about to get a lot worse this week

After a tough start to the season, which saw Arsenal lose their opening two games of the season against Chelsea and Manchester City, the Gunners seem to have found a bit of form as they have now won their last four Premier League games.

Despite arguably putting in their worst performance of the season against Everton at the weekend, Arsenal managed to beat the Toffees 2-0 but go into a tough game against Watford this weekend. Watford are one of the form teams in the league and unfortunately for Arsenal, they could be without Sokratis Papastathopoulos and will be without young defender, Konstantinos Mavropanos for four weeks according to Charles Watts.

The Breakdown

With Koscielny still out with a long-term injury, losing Mavropanos and Sokratis would be terrible news for the Gunners as it would leave only Rob Holding and Shkodran Mustafi as the only two out and out central defenders at the club.

With Sokratis unlikely to have been selected tomorrow night, Mavropanos could have picked up some valuable minutes but it now means that Mustafi and Holding will have to play two games in four days, with both also playing on Sunday too.

At a stage where Arsenal are just beginning to gather some form, losing the two defenders is a huge blow and it puts a lot of pressure on the current pair to not only perform but stay fit for the next few weeks. With a tough game against Watford this weekend, Troy Deeney must be relishing the opportunity of coming up against Holding and Mustafi.
