Aston Villa are one of the teams that needs to be active come the transfer window next month.

Going forward Villa have a solid array of attacking talent with Tammy Abraham one of the best in-form strikers in the league, Yannick Bolasie a Premier League standard winger and Jack Grealish as one of the better midfielders in the Championship. With that trio, Villa have more than enough to get them into the playoffs and back into the Premier League.

At the back, Smith has quickly improved the side but he will need to add some more defensive quality next month and according to Football Insider, the club is closing in on a deal for Sheffield Wednesday left-back, Matthew Penney.

The Breakdown

The left-back has been incredibly impressive for Wednesday this season and has been one of the club's best players behind Barry Bannan and Tom Lees. Moroever, against Villa last month, he put in an incredibly impressive performance and has therefore caught the eye of Villa.

With Neil Taylor as the only recognised left-back at the club, Smith needs to address their huge void and bring in someone who can add to the side. Not only is Penney young but he is also performing in an incredibly tough and competitive league. Add to those qualities the fact that he can play on the wing or in central midfield and Villa could be about to pull off an incredibly shrewd piece of business.
