It’s been a tough start to the season for Southampton as Mark Hughes’ men have continued their poor form from last season and currently sit 16th and look set to be involved in another relegation fight this season.
Although Southampton made some solid signings over the summer, namely Danny Ings, there hasn’t been much improvement in the side.
Aside from Ings, up front Southampton have once again struggled and have only scored six goals in the league, while also conceding 14.
With Shane Long seemingly unable to score a goal, Manolo Gabbiadini out of form and with Charlie Austin and Ings’ respective injury histories, the club need to freshen up front and with that in mind, the Mirror has linked them with a move for Sunderland striker, Josh Maja.
Sunderland are going through a period of rebirth and so far seem a team completely transformed under new boss Jack Ross.
Under the Scot, the Black Cats look like they could well return to the Championship a season after they were relegated. Maja has been a huge part of their improved form with the 19-year-old scoring nine goals in 12 games in the league.
Unfortunately for Sunderland, Maja’s deal runs out next season and as of yet, there has been no sign of him signing a new contract to stay at the club. He may not be tested at the top level but there’s no doubt that Southampton need to add some more quality up front and Maja could be the one for Mark Hughes.
