Newcastle better hope that Merson isn’t proved right

Although Newcastle lost against West Ham at the weekend, the Magpies have been on a run of good form lately and have won three of the last six games.

Impressively, they recorded victories against Watford and in form Bournemouth over the last few weeks and go into this weekend’s game against Wolves looking to pick up the three points.

They come up against a Wolves side that has been very solid this season and most recently picked up a win against Chelsea in midweek. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side sits six points ahead of Newcastle and if the Magpies want to push on from the relegation places, they need to win this weekend.

Ahead of the game, Sky Sports pundit, Paul Merson predicted that it would be an entertaining game and that it would finish 2-2.

The Breakdown

While the game may finish a draw, it seems odd to regard it as an entertaining game as both Newcastle and Wolves have struggled for goals this season with the two sides remaining in the bottom seven for goals scored. Moreover, Newcastle have only scored six at home this season while Wolves have managed just five away from home.

Essentially, this is a game Newcastle must win. Due to their poor start to the season, Rafa Benitez has left himself with a lot to do if he wants to keep the side up. It may prove to be a tough game but overall, Newcastle must win if they want to start to put some distance between them and the bottom three.
