With January fast approaching, Newcastle will surely be looking to add to their squad, although with Mike Ashley at the helm, the fans may not be happy with who arrives on Tyneside next month.

Over the summer, the club failed to bring in any big name recruits and instead replaced the outgoing Aleksandar Mitrovic with Salomon Rondon and Yoshinori Muto. While neither have been particularly bad, they haven't improved Newcastle's attack by much and as it stands, Rafa Benitez's side has only scored 13 goals this season.

There isn't much depth going forward therefore, Ashley must bring in some offensive recruits in order to push Newcastle up the table.

According to the Chronicle, Newcastle are interested in Japan international winger Ritsu Doan.

The Breakdown

The 20-year-old winger has scored four goals in 15 games this season for Dutch side FC Groningen. Last year he had a fairly impressive campaign as he managed nine goals while also registering four assists.

While those stats aren't exactly poor, Newcastle must be looking at a more experienced and better quality of attacker. Yes, Benitez's style of play is at times very negative but at the same time, they can't rely on Rondon to score all the goals for the side.

Doan certainly has the potential to be a good player and could be valuable as he can play on either wing but overall, Newcastle need a player that can push them towards 10th. Unfortunately for the fans, that may require Ashley searching for his elusive chequebook.
