After suffering back to back relegations, Sunderland went through a summer of huge change and as a result, look like they've finally turned the corner under the new ownership of Stewart Donald.

Donald appointed former St Mirren boss, Jack Ross over the summer and so far this season, it looks as though it was an astute appointment as Sunderland have shown that they are genuine promotion contenders this season and sit third in the table.

Over the summer, Sunderland strengthened heavily and so far it looks as though the new recruits have made a huge impact on the side. The likes of Luke O'Nien and Dylan McGeouch have been brilliant this season but if Sunderland are to gain promotion next summer, they need to strengthen in January.

In what will come as great news to Sunderland fans, Donald has opened the door to making some signings in January.

The Breakdown

Amid a summer where Sunderland signed a host of new players, there was also a summer exodus which saw Didier Ndong and Papy Djilobodji both sacked from the club.

While Sunderland will look to add more players in January, the club still have some high earners on their books such as Lee Cattermole, Bryan Oviedo and Aiden McGeady. Having those three may reduce the club's ability to sign players next month but the fact that Donald is already open and willing to bring more recruits in January is a great sign for the club.

If Sunderland can strengthen in certain areas, promotion could well be on the cards for the Black Cats.
