Success on the continent could prove costly for Rangers

Success on the continent could prove costly for Rangers

Under Steven Gerrard, Rangers have already improved massively and currently sit fifth in the table, five points off Hearts at the top.

Over the summer, Rangers signed a raft of new players in order to try and halt Celtic’s dominance. Their city rivals could make it 10 consecutive titles if they win this season and Gerrard would become an instant hero at the club if he won the league over Celtic.

Impressively, Gerrard guided through a tough European Qualifying campaign in Europe to then hold Villareal to a 2-2 draw away from home. Rangers followed that up by beating Rapid Wien in their second game thanks to goals from two of the club’s star players, James Tavernier and Alfredo Morelos.

Both players have been outstanding so far this season, and if they can continue to perform,  in Europe they’re only going to grab more attention from clubs which could lead them to leave the club according to Liverpool legend Kenny Daglish.

The Breakdown

Celtic’s scouting over the last few years has been outstanding and due to their relative success in Europe, the likes of Victor Wanyama, Virgil Van Dijk and Fraser Forster have all earned big moves to the Premier League.

Success in Europe is a double-edged sword. Holding teams like Villareal to a draw builds success and momentum but it also showcases the squad’s talent.

If Rangers continue to win abroad and pull off impressive wins, the likes of Morelos and Tavernier may well be heading down south sooner rather than later.
