Unlike years past, there's been a lot to cheer about for Sunderland fans this season as the Black Cats have stormed to the top of the table and are hot on the heels of Portsmouth in first.

Thanks to Stewart Donald's takeover and with Jack Ross at the helm, Sunderland now look like a side that could well go back into the Championship. Due to the performances of star players, Josh Maja and Lynden Gooch, Sunderland have now become one of the most dangerous sides in the league.

Worryingly for Sunderland, both players could leave the club next summer as they enter the final six months of their respective deals. There's no update on Maja's deal but according to the Chronicle Live, Gooch is close to agreeing a new deal with the club.

The Breakdown

During his time at the club, the 22-year-old has made 62 appearances for the club and has scored eight goals. This season, however, he is in the form of his career and has scored five goals, while also registering seven assists.

Although star man, Maja's contract situation has not been rectified, to be close to signing their other key player is huge news for the club. At 22, he's still got his best years ahead of him and could become a key man for the side in the long run.

If they gain promotion this season, Gooch will key in establishing Sunderland as a Championship club once again and possibly even get them back into the Premier League.
