Following the contract sagas of Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil, Arsenal could ill afford to have yet another one of their star players within the last year of their contract but low and behold, Aaron Ramsey's deal runs out at the end of this season.

It was thought that the two parties were hopeful of coming to an agreement over a new contract but according to multiple reports, talks have broken down between the two parties, and Ramsey looks set to either leave next year on a free transfer or be sold in January.

Despite losing a player that has at times shown flashes of potential, Arsenal could well have two replacements waiting in the wings to take his place.

The Breakdown

Joining the Gunners in 2008, Ramsey is the club's longest-serving player but over his time at the club, his form has been erratic and in truth, he's been living off his superb 2013/14 season.

Primarily, Ramsey either plays as a number 10 or a box to box midfielder but it remains to be seen if he really fits into either mould in Emery's team.

Over the pre-season, Emile Smith Rowe emerged as the next talent from the Arsenal academy. The 18-year-old can play either as a winger or as an attacking midfielder and his ability to beat players in tight positions could be a great fit for the Gunners.

Further back in midfield, Ainsley Maitland-Niles could be the energetic midfielder to play at the base of midfield. While he may not have the scoring ability of Ramsey, what he does offer is energy and good technical ability. Both players offer great potential to the side and could well fill the boots of Ramsey in both positions.
