Since joining the club for £75 million in January, Virgil Van Dijk has completely transformed Liverpool’s defence and especially this year, the Reds have looked rock solid at the back and have so far only conceded three goals in the league, joint top with Manchester City.
With Van Dijk and Gomez at the back, combined with their devastating front three, it’s safe to say that Liverpool are serious title contenders this season. However, in what will come as worrying news for the Liverpool fans, according to Holland boss, Ronald Koeman, the defender has been playing with two broken ribs over the last few weeks and has had to have injections to be able to play.
As a precaution, Van Dijk will not play against Belgium on Tuesday but according to Koeman, he will be fit to play against Huddersfield this weekend.
Having played through his recent injury problem should show Liverpool fans that they finally have a reliable and tough defender at the back and that they’ll won’t have to see too much of Dejan Lovren this year.
The big Dutchman is a crucial player to the club’s title hopes and without him, Liverpool lose arguably one of the best defenders in Europe. They haven’t got the toughest run of games coming up but they still need to keep up the momentum on their title rivals and losing Van Dijk would surely have a huge effect.
