# Newcastle United: PIF ‘most fearsome’ in Tiago Djalo pursuit

**[Newcastle United](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/newcastle-united-news/) are reportedly the ‘most fearsome’ club in the pursuit of Lille gem Tiago Djalo.**

### The Lowdown: Djalo profiled

At 22 years of age, Djalo is emerging as one of the most promising central defenders in the game, and has been hailed as ‘terrific’ and a future star by journalist [Antonio Mango](https://twitter.com/AntonioMango4/status/1624851408997548034).

For Lille, he has played in [all but one](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/tiago-djalo/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/420465/plus/0?saison=2022&verein=&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=&trainer_id=) game in Ligue 1 so far this season, helping them [push](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/french-ligue-one/table) for European qualification, and has been labelled as ‘one of the best defenders’ in the division by journalist [Zach Lowy](https://twitter.com/ZachLowy/status/1628399237938413569).

Djalo is sure to attract plenty of interest this summer, especially considering Lille’s [history](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/losc-lille/rekordabgaenge/verein/1082) of selling players on for a big profit.

### The Latest: Newcastle ‘most fearsome’

As per Italian news outlet [Inter Live](https://www.interlive.it/2023/02/23/calciomercato-inter-interlive-agente-djalo-sede-lille-skriniar/), Newcastle are the ‘most fearsome’ in their pursuit of Djalo for this summer, and are ‘ready to offer’ over €20m (£17.6m) to sign him.

However, Inter Milan are also in the race for his signature, and have ‘already found a half agreement’ with the Portuguese gem.

### The Verdict: Get it done

For £17.6m, Djalo could turn out to be a real bargain in the future given his age, and so this is a deal that the Magpies should be getting done.

Football talent scout [Jacek Kulig](https://twitter.com/FTalentScout/status/1211723464824033282?s=20&t=KbwlvJiBLroMiIfJ-GV2vw) lists his strengths as ‘pace, tackling, heading, positioning, athleticism’, adding that he is a ‘complete’ and ‘dominant’ centre-back, and likens him to Manchester United star Raphael Varane.

Djalo’s completeness is emphasised by the fact that he ranks in the [top 25%](https://fbref.com/en/players/b2336681/Tiago-Djalo) of all centre-halves in Europe’s top five leagues for a number of key metrics, including average tackles and pass completion rate per game.

Nonetheless, Djalo will know Sven Botman well, with the centre-back making the switch to St. James’ Park from Lille last season, and so the pair could form a formidable new partnership on Tyneside.
