A moment in time: Charlton’s dire 2015/16 season

Back in the 2015/16 season in the Championship. Charlton Atheltic fans had no idea what they were in for. The Addicks finished nine points adrift of safety in the Championship and spent every single minute in the bottom three after the 15th December.

A lot of Charlton fans absolutely detest life under the ownership of Roland Duchetelet, when he started investing in the club in January 2014, coincidently, the club started deteriorating. His first half of a season as an investor in the club saw them finish 12th, but then in their first full campaign with him around at The Valley they suffered the drop in shocking fashion, shipping 80 goals in their 46 games and winning just nine times.

Since they suffered the drop, the club has recorded 12th and 6th place finishes in English football’s third tier, with last season seeing them lose to Shrewsbury in the semi-finals of the League One playoffs. Despite that, though, and with the club currently 6th in League One at the moment as we approach the halfway point of the 2018/19 season, the competition for promotion from the division looks too tough for Charlton to handle.

All of this has come from that dreaded campaign back in the 2015/16. There was some shocking results that the fans had to suffer that year, and it never looks good when you finish the season having played 50 games in the league and the domestic cups and have your top scorer sitting on a meagre six goals, but that was the case as Johan Gudmundsson top-scored for The Addicks as they lost by three or more goals a staggering eleven times.

If the club can get away from Duchatelet anytime soon and get an owner who has a bit of passion for the club to bring something meaningful to The Valley then they might have faith in getting back out of League One and back to the Championship. However, the feeling that they might achieve that is slim, especially as they’re currently competing with Sunderland, Luton, Portsmouth and Barnsley for a promotion spot.
