Marcelo Bielsa has enjoyed a captivating opening to his career at Leeds United despite the fact his players have suffered from a whole host of injury problems.
One of the most noteworthy qualities of any title-winning or promotion-chasing side is possessing the ability to grind out positive results through the face of adversity.
When the chips are down and circumstances beyond human control come in to play, the very best teams continue to claim victories.
And that’s exactly what Leeds United have done this season during a period of time in which a handful of their most influential players have been sidelined, including the likes of Kemar Roofe, Pablo Hernandez and Barry Douglas more recently.
Douglas’ absence against promotion-rivals Brentford presented Bielsa with a problem at left-back and his solution was to start Stuart Dallas in his position, rather than trust in 20-year-old Tom Pearce – a player who is more naturally suited to the role.
The conundrum proved that Bielsa is lacking the presence of a quality back-up for Douglas, but a recent report from Goal suggests that, in the event of promotion, Leeds could secure the services of a quality left-back without having to spend a penny.
The report claims that Liverpool’s Alberto Moreno is set to depart Anfield at the end of the season after he fell desperately out of favour under Jurgen Klopp due to the impeccable form of Andrew Robertson.
Whilst there are certainly some doubts about his consistency at left-back, he is a player who could thrive in Biesla’s free-flowing system.
Moreno was finally beginning to play with the tenacity and quality of a top-four full-back before he suffered an injury which opened the door for Robertson to cement his place in the first-team, but his improvement has been long forgotten by the Reds.
With the marauding ability to influence the game at both ends of the pitch, a brilliant crossing technique and plenty of Champions League experience, Bielsa could solve his left-back problem by signing Moreno in 2019 – but Leeds will only be in contention for his signature if they are promoted this season.
