Leeds United supporters in the Transfer Tavern have today been left to rue their side’s Carabao Cup exit at the hands of Leicester City last night after seeing the Yorkshire giants lose 3-1 at the King Power Stadium.
Thomas Christiansen’s men reached the fourth round thanks to victories over Port Vale, Newport County, and Burnley, and they looked on course for a second successive Premier League scalp when Pablo Hernandez fired them into a 26th minute lead. However, the Foxes hit back and goals from Kelechi Iheanacho, Islam Slimani, and Riyad Mahrez sealed their passage through to the qurter-finals, and at the same time secured a second successive win for caretaker boss Michael Appleton, who has temporarily taken over the side following Craig Shakespeare’s departure last week.
For Leeds though, their wait for a second League Cup title will have to go on, but there has been some positive news coming out of the club today as their official website has confirmed that defender Pontus Jansson has signed a new deal with the Whites.
The 26-year-old made the move to Elland Road on loan at the start of last season and played a vital role in helping the club secure a seventh place finish in the Championship last time round under former boss Garry Monk.
And the Yorkshire giants were clearly happy with what they were seeing as in February of this year they sealed a permanent deal for the Sweden international, who continues to play a key role under new head coach Christiansen having started ten of their 13 Championship games this term.
And Jansson’s fine efforts at the heart of the Whites backline has earned him a new five-year deal at Elland Road, which will keep him at the second tier outfit until the summer of 2022, by which time he and indeed our resident Leeds fans will be hoping that the club are back in the Premier League.
Landlord’s verdict: Leeds United worked extremely hard over the summer bringing several new faces into the squad, but they also placed great emphasis on keeping those already at the club.
Although Chris Wood left for Burnley, the likes of Liam Cooper, Stuart Dallas, and Kalvin Phillips all signed new contracts during the close season, and Pontus Jansson can be added to that list as of today.
The Sweden international has proven his worth at Elland Road since making a temporary move there last summer, and he now looks set for a long stint at the club after signing a deal which will keep him there until 2022.
And given how impressive he was last season, even if this term he hasn’t quite hit those heights yet, this could turn out to be one of Leeds’ most important deals of the campaign.
