Speaking to the Mirror, former Crystal Palace and now Newcastle United forward Dwight Gayle has said he has set himself a target of at least 20 goals this season in the Championship.
The former Peterborough United striker has scored nine goals in ten starts for the north east side so far this season leaving our resident Magpies fans here in the Transfer Tavern purring, as they look to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.
He scored two against London club Brentford at the weekend in a 3-1 win and says he’ll be aiming for 20 strikes by the end of May.
Speaking to the Mirror, he said: “20 is where you start as a striker and I just want to be winning games for the team. The main thing for me is not even goals, I just want to get promoted and get back up to the Premier League with the club. But yes, 20 is a good marker personally. We need to score goals to get promoted and I’m happy to help out but we’ve got other great players in there as well.”
Newcastle sit a point behind Championship leaders Norwich City at the moment with a game away at Oakwell against Barnsley next on the agenda tonight, and the fans by the bar here in the Tavern are hoping that Gayle will start once more!
Gayle has been competing with the likes of Aleksandar Mitrovic and Ayoze Perez for the starting spot up front so far this season, and looks set to be the regular striker for Rafa Benitez’s men for the time being.
Our landlord thinks the former Palace striker is way too good for the Championship, and thinks the striker should be plying his trade in the Premier League week in, week out!
