According to TEAMtalk, Sheffield Wednesday are hoping to sign 30-year-old free agent Efe Ambrose this January.
The 51-cap Nigeria international has been a rock for Scottish outfit Hibernian for the last two years, but exercised a clause in his contract to be released this month.
Ambrose is a versatile player, capable of playing as a centre-back, rightback or defensive midfielder, which will make him a huge asset at Hillsborough. He spent four and a half years at Parkhead with Celtic, and brings a wealth of experience with him.
Under former manager Jos Luhukay, Wednesday had a terrible defensive record, as the entire setup looked in disarray. This meant a huge raft of players were rotated, as the Dutchman failed to decide upon his best defence. Subsequently, a number of players fell out of form, including captain Tom Lees. The arrival of Ambrose will add solidity to a defence that has looked remarkably frail at times, and susceptible to errors.
While it is fair to say that The Owls have looked stronger at the back in recent weeks, they are still crying out for a player to shore up the defence, and the 6ft 3 Ambrose could be that man. He is also comfortable on the ball, which will make him an asset to any manager.
With Steve Bruce’s arrival at Hillsborough coming soon, the former Aston Villa manager will relish the thought of new faces arriving at the club as well, and Ambrose could make his job that much easier.
