England footballing legend Stuart Pearce made 747 appearances during his professional career and also collected 78 caps for his country, becoming one of the most passionate players to ever wear the three lions in the process.
Recently, however, Pearce swapped the glitz and the glamour of playing in the Premier League and on the international stage for Longford AFC, the country’s ‘worst’ team.
The left-back agreed to play a game for the team, who have a goal difference of -180 for the season so far, and made his debut recently when he stepped off the bench in a 1-0 reverse to their rivals Wotton Rovers.
Pearce, who has not played a game for 14 years, has been out of work since being sacked as manager of Nottingham Forest in February of last year and was signed up for the game with Longford AFC, courtesy of insurers Direct Line.
Incidentally, Pearce nearly marked a dream return with a goal whipping a corner in from the right that sailed just wide of the goalkeeper’s post.
His performance certainly showed there is life in these old bones still and that age is just a number! Here is Stuart promoting Direct Line’s ‘direct line, direct fix’ slogan…
