‘That’s quite a statement of intent’, ‘Love it’ – Fans react with delight to major Leeds news

Leeds United supporters in the Transfer Tavern have been turning their attentions back to the Championship in recent days following the Whites’ exit from the Carabao Cup at the hands of Leicester City on Tuesday night.

Thomas Christiansen’s men got past Port Vale, Newport County, and Burnley to reach the last 16 of the competition, and they looked on course for another Premier League scalp when Pablo Hernandez gave them a 26th minute lead at the King Power Stadium. However, the Foxes hit back and goals from Kelechi Iheanacho, Islam Slimani, and Riyad Mahrez secured their passage through the quarter-finals, and in turn kept alive their hopes of adding a first League Cup title since 2000.

For Leeds though, it wasn’t to be but they are very much in promotion contention in the Championship given they sit fourth after 13 games of the campaign, and as such our resident Whites fans are already focusing on a huge game at Elland Road on Friday night where Christiansen’s men will take on third place Sheffield United.

And the Yorkshire giants will go into that game with some positivity as they announced on Wednesday that defender Pontus Jansson had penned a new deal four-year deal at the club, which will keep him at Elland Road until 2021.

The Sweden international moved to Leeds on loan back in August 2016 but impressed immeasurably to the point that they made his deal permanent back in February, what with the centre-back playing a key role in helping Garry Monk’s side finish seventh in the division.

And although he hasn’t quite hit those heights yet this season, Jansson will certainly be a vital player for Christiansen as the season progresses, which is why news of his improved contract has stimulated quite a response from Leeds supporters on Twitter.

And it’s fair to say that they are delighted with the news…
