Derby County fans will be excited for next season following their 3-0 win over Southampton in pre-season.

Frank Lampard’s first game against Premier League opposition went exactly to plan with a brace from Tom Lawrence and a Mason Bennett strike securing an impressive victory. The former Chelsea skipper handed debuts to new signings Florian Jozefzoon, Mason Mount and Harry Wilson. Derby will welcome Wolves to Pride Park on July 28th.

Lampard is expected to return to the transfer market in search of a new striker this summer. Last season’s top scorer, Matej Vydra, is set to leave the club and is yet to feature in pre-season due to injury. Leeds have been long-term admirers of the forward, but haven’t reached Derby’s valuation, thus leaving the former Watford forward with an uncertain few weeks.

Yet Lampard's attentions will turn to who could replace the Czech Republic international, with Peterborough United's Jack Marriott the man they should seek to fill Vydra's shoes, and thus fire them back to the Premier League this season.

Valued at £315,000 by Transfermarkt, the 23-year-old was the star of the season in League One, scoring a remarkable 27 league goals - he also scored five in the FA Cup to bring his final season tally to a staggering 32.

Marriott is a clever forward who loves putting defenders under pressure and forcing mistakes. The Englishman uses his instincts and is a fantastic finisher and, at the tender age of 23, his best years are ahead of him.

Alongside Mount and Wilson in the Derby attack, the Rams would surely be a shoe-in for promotion, which is why Derby fans would likely forget about Vydra in a heartbeat if Marriott became their fourth signing of the transfer window.
