Hoolahan a pointless signing for The Baggies

Hoolahan a pointless signing for The Baggies

According The Birmingham Mail, West Brom are on the verge of signing free agent Wes Hoolahan.

The Republic of Ireland international has spent the past ten years at Norwich City, racking up over 350 appearances for The Canaries. However, at the age of 36, the midfielder is no longer deemed necessary at Carrow Road and was released.

While a new signing is always a boost for a club, it does seem strange that West Brom have made a move for this one. Manager Darren Moore already has a settled squad, with a lot of experience and class in it. But experience is the operative word in this circumstance.

The Baggies already have the likes of Gareth Barry, Chris Brunt and James Morrison as central midfielders at the club that are all over the age of 30. They aren’t lacking in this department, and Hoolahan (valued at £900k on just seems surplus to requirements.

There is a huge gulf between the very experienced players at the Hawthorns (the ones mentioned) and the other central midfielder, who tend to be in their very early twenties or younger. Jake Livermore is one of the few players that straddles this divide at the age of 28.

That is why it just seems pointless in signing Hoolahan. Barry has struggled for consistent game time under Moore this season, and, although he is a year older than Hoolahan at the age of 37, it seems more likely that the manager would turn to him before the Irishman.

Hoolahan must know this, however, and rather than accepting that his career was over once he left Norwich, has accepted playing a bit-part role, because, after all, it is better than nothing.
