Igor Vetokele admits he is glad to be back at Charlton

Charlton Athletic returned to winning ways with an emphatic 8-0 victory against Stevenage earlier in the week in the Checkatrade Trophy.

Lee Bowyer’s side have been performing well in League One this season, however, they had lost their two previous outings with the mistakes that had been made.

The Addicks would have been delighted with the result, considering the number of changes to the side the manager made, however, one man has revealed he is just happy to be back at The Valley.

Igor Vetokele started his career with Charlton in fine fashion in 2014, but injuries took a massive toll on him and he then spent two seasons on loan away from the club.

The striker managed to get his first taste of action in the Tuesday win, where he is claiming he scored twice instead of the once and admitted that he is happy to be representing the club once again.

“I’d been away for two seasons and I really wanted to come back and help Charlton to get back to where it belongs,” he told the club’s official website.

“This is my first step and now I need to continue and keep working.

“First of all, I wanted stability. I didn’t want to have to move again. In my mind, I felt like I had to come back to Charlton – that’s what I said to my wife at the end of last season. That’s when I made up my mind.

“I asked the owner if I could come back and he said that I had a choice. I wanted to come back – it is not always in your hands – but I’m glad that I’m here now.”

The Verdict:

Vetokele will need to wait for his chance to get first-team action in the League, however, he certainly made the right impression in midweek.

The Angola international is currently behind the likes of Lyle Taylor and Karlan Ahearne-Grant in the pecking order, but his performance against Stevenage will surely have given Bowyer something to think about.

Vetokele’s attitude will surely please those at The Valley as he admitted he wants to be back and helping the club to get back to where they belong, and if he can rediscover his form and get the opportunities to do so, he could become an important player for them this season.
