Leeds could live to regret not signing Ben Woodburn

Leeds United’s transfer window is finally gathering pace following weeks of frustration for the supporters, but a recent signing from one of their promotion-rivals certainly stands out as a notable missed opportunity.

According to BBC Sport, Sheffield United have signed Ben Woodburn on a season-long loan deal from Liverpool, with Chris Wilder describing his arrival as a “great signing”. The Blades boss is certainly not wrong there, as the 18-year-old playmaker has demonstrated a level of potential throughout his development which suggests he could eventually break into Liverpool’s first-team.

With that being said, there is no doubt that Marcelo Bielsa has missed a fantastic opportunity by failing to sign Woodburn this summer.

Although Woodburn has no prior experience at Championship level, the fact he has already been capped 7-times at international level for Wales suggests he has the mentality to cope with the step up to senior football.

Besides, the 18-year-old prodigy spent the entirety of the previous campaign training alongside some of the world’s best footballers at Melwood, and the experience he has acquired from his day-to-day routine at Liverpool will certainly hold him in good stead for a successful loan spell at Bramall Lane.

With the versatility to operate in a central number ten role, or out on the left-wing, Woodburn could have provided Bielsa with a valuable attacking option to exploit throughout the season, especially considering Leeds have no quality attacking midfield options to call upon at this moment in time.

There may well be tactical reasons for Bielsa’s failure to sign Woodburn this summer but, if he lives up to his potential with Sheffield United, there is no doubt that his impact will give the club a huge boost in their bid to reach the play-offs, potentially at Leeds’ expense.
