Leeds United’s unbeaten start to the season finally came to an end on Saturday afternoon as Birmingham City came away from Elland Road with a 2-1 victory.
Following 4 straight draws in the Championship, Garry Monk took his side to Yorkshire for a fixture which very few fancied his side to win, but two first-half goals from Che Adams proved decisive for the travelling side. Egzjan Alioski pulled one back for the Whites with just 5 minutes remaining but they were unable to clinch a late equaliser.
It was a disappointing result for Leeds after the impeccable start they have made, but the supporters were eager to focus on the positives despite the result.
Indeed, in the aftermath of proceedings TT’s Ally Darlow delved into Twitter to assess the reaction and he found plenty of Leeds fans who were heaping praise on 19-year-old Tyler Roberts following another impressive performance for the club.
Roberts has hardly featured for the club since he signed from West Bromwich Albion in January, but injuries to Kemar Roofe and Patrick Bamford have provided an opening in the first-team which he has taken with both hands thus far.
Roberts has demonstrated his ability to both make direct runs into the channels and receive the ball with his back to goal, and with 2 goals from his first 3 games it’s fair to say he is one to watch for the future.
With Bamford ruled out through injury for the next few months there’s no doubt that Roberts’ could play a crucial role in Leeds’ bid to reach the top-flight this season as he will play the role of Kemar Roofe’s understudy for the foreseeable future.
His performances in Bamford’s absence will determine the extent of Leeds’ potency in the final-third and, if he is able to continue in the same vein he has began the campaign, he may even find himself firmly ahead of Bamford in the pecking order when he finally returns.
Leeds fans are certainly well within their rights to lavish praise on the 2-cap international for both his performance on Saturday and his form so far this season, and they will be hoping his performances merely represent the beginning of a glowing season for the club’s rising star.
