According to The Daily Mail, QPR are interested in signing Aston Villa defender Tommy Elphick on loan, in a deal that would boost their survival hopes.
QPR have had a poor start to their Championship campaign, however, a win last weekend against Wigan at Loftus Road suggests The Rs’ fortunes are about to change. This could be aided by securing a deal for a former Championship winning captain in Elphick.
While The Hoops look to be improving this season, shown by a League Cup win against Bristol Rovers on Tuesday, there are still weaknesses in their side, one of them being their defence.
QPR have only recruited one centre-back so far this summer, Toni Leistner, and manager Steve McClaren will desperately want to bolster that position before Friday night when the transfer window closes for EFL clubs. While the club have been linked to a number of centre-backs, none have come to fruition, which will be a worry.
An injury ravaged 2017/18 at both Villa and on loan to Reading meant Elphick (valued at £2.25m on Transfermarkt.co.uk) barely played last season, but he could certainly do a job at Loftus Road. The defender has won the Championship before, so he has a winning mentality that will benefit any players involved at the club.
This is a deal that will also suit him as he will want to play as much as possible, and there is a chance that he has been told that he is not part of Villa manager Steve Bruce’s plans. At the age of 30, he will not want to be wasting his career sitting with the reserves, and QPR will be able to offer him consistent game time.
With just over two days left in the transfer window for Elf clubs, this is a deal that McClaren should try desperately to secure, as his options are running out.
